We all use photography in so many ways, to re-look at, remind and re-narrate our lives and we also communicate that narrative to others, whether it’s the snapshot on social media or the crafted image such as from a wedding. How we look, feel and present ourselves is ever more captured and reviewed through the photograph.

So, how can photography be used to give voice to those who have undergone bariatric surgery and unpick some of the social challenges and assumptions that are made around obesity, the method of weight-loss and the journey to improved health and wellbeing? If food is a social and cultural marker, then the cook book is the instruction manual – and so using this format in a way that goes beyond the traditional food pictures and recipes, this work can explore the complex social and cultural challenges that exist for individuals as they live with a body altered by bariatric surgery.

A Cook Book – The Journey Beyond Bariatric Surgery

Working with a self-selecting bariatric surgery patient group this work will bring together Dr. Yitka Graham’s research into patient experience and patient safety in relation to bariatric surgery and Arabella Plouviez’s research into the uses of photography in challenging stereotyping and giving voice to under-represented groups.
