Waste Futures Art and Science Labs: Kirkaldy
29 - 31 May 2026
The RACC research team will work with local communities and stakeholders to build understanding of our waste cultures and creatively engage with the social-environmental risks associated with accelerating coastal erosion occurring in Kircaldy, Scotland.
Designed to feel familiar and inclusive, the lab activities (including walks, coffee morning discussions and workshops) will foster collaborative inquiry and knowledge exchange across expert and local knowledges. They will enable participants to share personal memories, surface local concerns, and cultivate a collective critical awareness of a particular place — situating the waste sites within an evolving landscape.
The aim of the creative labs is to explore how creativity and art making can explore the overlapping relationship between known and recently discovered heritage landfill sites and accelerating coastal erosion occurring in Kirkcaldy. We hope to open space for dialogue across diverse individuals and more than human communities that might draw out the hopes, fears and aspirations of communities who live there. Participants will be invited to connect with affected sites both emotionally and experientially. Participants will also be invited to reflect on changes in the coastal environment and explore what these changes reveal about these dynamic sites today.
We are particularly interested in creatives who can deliver workshops that engage meaningfully with more than human living organisms, ideally telling new stories and fostering shared learning between participants.
